Greetings Rattlers!
Welcome to another issue of FAMU Forward. We are excited to continue to share the extraordinary achievements of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community.
As the fall draws near, we continue to extend a heartfelt welcome to the students and parents attending our New Student Orientation sessions on campus throughout the summer. With only one session remaining, we look forward to providing the best education possible as our students navigate along the road to fulfilling their goals and dreams!
Last week, I was thrilled to welcome more than 200 high school students from across the country to campus for the Annual Marching “100” Summer Band Camp. The students provided energetic and exciting performances during their time on the “Hill” and got a first-hand look at the musicianship FAMU is renowned for around the globe. I extend congratulations to Director of Bands Shelby Chipman, Ph.D., camp staff, and everyone who volunteered their efforts toward a job well done.
The continued advancement of our music program reminds us that it is important that we keep marching forward toward an outstanding 2016-17 academic year. I remain encouraged by the accomplishments and contributions of the multi-talented members of the University community. Your efforts and contributions have not gone unnoticed and are prime examples of the important role FAMU continues to play in our nation’s higher education landscape. I look forward to celebrating the hard work of our faculty and staff at our upcoming Appreciation Fish Fry on July 26.
In this issue, you will have an opportunity to read a Q&A with students and parents participating in the student orientation process. There is also a heart-warming story about our very own Gussie Williams Mallory, who at 107, was our oldest living Rattler, and sadly passed on this past weekend. Please visit www.famunews.com to learn more about the path we are setting for the future of FAMU in the first story of a multi-part series on the proposed “FAMU Forever Forward” strategic plan, which is scheduled to publish weekly on the news site.
As I conclude, please know that you are all important members of the FAMUly and great contributors to the University’s success. As students, faculty, staff, alumni, retirees, and supporters, each of you represent the best that FAMU has to offer and serve among our most vital connections and voices to the world. Please remain committed to FAMU’s cause and know that your support is appreciated. Your tireless dedication and service provides true strength and encouragement to this Administration. We must continue to unite around the mission of this great institution and work together to move FAMU Forever Forward.
Thank you and keep striking Rattlers!
